County Weed Abatement

The fire season can be extremely dangerous and we are extremely concerned about the tall dry grass, weeds, brush growth and/or combustible debris which may be on your property.

It is the duty of Salida Fire to enforce the Stanislaus County Weed control program. In conjunction with the Stanislaus County Fire Warden’s office we would like to thank you for keeping our community safe. It is our belief that we can stop potential fire hazards on your property or in your alley. Based on the recent seasonal weather pattern and precipitation (which has been minimal), the “dry season” is upon us. This is typically May 15th to October 1st and is characterized by lower humidity, lower fuel moisture, and higher daily temperatures, resulting in increased fire danger.

The following tips will “Help us, help you.”

1. Mowing and or weed-eating, with all cuttings removed. (A good rule of thumb to use is after cutting insure that the grass or weeds do not exceed 4” in height)

2. Remove and clear all downed trees, branches and leaves.

3. Remove and clear vines, ferns or other vegetation that will support fire and its growth and intensity. Exception is growth ordinarily and customarily planted for decorative purposes and which has been planted for decorative purposes and is under continuing cultivation and maintenance.

4. Remove any hazardous and combustible material from exterior property (yards)

5. Remove all rubbish and garbage from property and surrounding areas

Inspections on properties will be initiated by our complaint procedures. These inspections shall be performed by Salida Fire Department, properties not in compliance will be posted with a notice of abatement and the land owner will be notified. There is a 7 day period in which the land owner will have time to bring the property up to compliance. Immediate abatement is required and must be maintained. Failure to comply may result in abatement under authority by the Fire Wardens office and the cost of such abatement made a legal charge against the owner or owners of the property, and it shall become a lien on the property in accordance with Section 14930 of the Health and Safety Code and Section 25845 of the Government Code. (Ord.NS 1094 1, 1982: prior code 3-220)
